Score Running Handbook
In this section you will find a wealth of information outlining all aspects of score running to help your efforts in attaining the highest score possible.

First off, you may be wondering what all this is so let me fill you in. Score Running is a new and developing sport within the world of halo 3. There is one goal here: get as many points as possible. Using the campaign scoring feature, score "runners" are awarded "base points" for killing enemies (typically the harder the enemy, the more points earned). This base score can then receive several different types of "Multipliers":

Difficulty Multiplier - Harder difficulty = Higher multiplier to your base score.
- [.25x] Easy - This actually makes your score lower! Don't be noob enough to play this garbage.
- [1.0x] Normal - Your base score in unaffected.
- [2.0x] Heroic - Now we're getting somewhere.
- [4.0x] Legendary - This, is where the big boys play.

Skull Multipliers - By turning on each of the golden skulls, you can add a multiplier to your score for a possible total of 16.5x. However, in doing so various properties of the game are changed to make it harder.
- [3.0x] Iron - If you die, you have to restart the entire mission.
- [1.5x] Black Eye - Your shield no longer regenerates itself, however, everytime you melee an enemy it will start to recharge.
- [1.5x] Tough Luck - Enemies dodge grenades, plasma pistol bolts, needles, splatter attempts like ninjas.
- [1.5x] Catch - Enemies throw ridiculous amounts of grenades. This also means they drop them more often.
- [1.5x] Fog - Your motion tracker is disabled.
- [2.0x] Famine - Enemy weapon drops have less ammo in them. Fortunately, pre-positioned weapons remain the same.
- [1.5x] Thunderstorm - Each enemy upgrades their rank, whatever that means...
- [2.0x] Tilt - Brute Armor is immune to all human weaponry and can only be brought down by plasma or a power drainer.
- [2.0x] Mythic - Enemies have double their normal health, not to be confused with shield power.

Medal Multipliers - You can earn multipliers by adding some style to your kills.
- [1.25x] Headshot - Steady, Aim, Fire.
- [1.25x] Sticky - Stick or Spike an enemy.
- [1.25x] Assassination - Melee an enemy from behind.
- [1.25x] Needler - Shoot enough needles into an enemy until they explode.
- [1.25x] Splatter - Run an enemy over with a vehicle.
- [1.25x] EMP - Disable an enemies shield with either a charged plasma pistol bolt or a power drainer and finish them off within 3 seconds.
- [1.25x] Multikill - Kill 3 or more enemies within 1.5 seconds.

Medal Combos - You can increase your score significantly by earning multiple medals at once. The list below does not show every possible medal combo, but the most common and practical ones.
- Multi Headshot - Headshot 3 or more enemies in 1.5 seconds. Good for grunts or flood infantry when grouped together.
- EMP Headshot - This should be your medal combo of choice.
- EMP Stick - Good for brutes at very close range or when their back is turned at mid range.
- EMP Assassination - Good for brutes when their back is turned at very close range.
- EMP Needler - Good for close range battles with multiple brutes or to save BR ammo.
- EMP Sticky Multikill (1 Brute, 2 Grunts) - EMP Stick a brute and headshot (preferably) 2 grunts in 1.5 seconds of it's death.
- EMP Headshot Multikill (3 Brutes) - Throw a power drainer into the middle of a group of brutes so at least three are within it's radius. Once their shields go down headshot all 3 brutes within 1.5 seconds.
- Phantom/Scarab Multikill - Quickly tag 2 grunts during the 1.5 second window of killing either a phantom or scarab. Obviously this could be done with any of the enemies, though this seems the most practical.

Time Multiplier - By completing levels faster than normal, you are awarded a big bonus. When the game starts, the timer begins counting, you will notice the time multiplier starts at 3x. This will decrease once the clock exceeds a certain point. The times displayed here are how long you have until your current multiplier downgrades to the next. After the 2.0x time it drops to 1x becoming ineffective.

Formulas - Now that you know what everything is, you might want to know how it's all calculated right? *Warning, this section contains math, so some of you may want to turn around at this point...yes I'm talking to you!

((Base Score(Skulls+Difficulty))Time) = Final Score

This formula does not take medals into account. Unfortunately, the game does not tell you your base score like I've been talking about. What you see at the bottom right while playing already has the medal, skull, and difficulty points calculated in and only until the end of the level does it factor in time. This means we must factor in any medal multipliers to the base score before hand. Once we determine the base score after figuring in the medals, you simply plug everything into the formula..

We're going to start off with the headshot medal. You get a 1.25 multiplier to base score for a headshot. In this case we will use a grunt which has a base score of 10. This can be written as:
1 Grunt HS = (10*1.25) = 12.5
We can now plug this new base score into the formula , so let's calculate the max points you can receive for a single grunt headshot. This means the game must be on legendary, with all skulls, and the 3x timer is met.
(12.5((16.5+4)3))
(12.5(20.5*3))
(12.5*61.5) = 769 total points

Easy enough right? Next, we have a multikill. You get a 1.25 multiplier for each enemy killed here. In this case we will use 3 grunts and solve for max points again.
3 Grunt MK = (10*1.25) + (10*1.25) + (10*1.25) = 37.5
(37.5((16.5+4)3)) = 2306 total points

So far so good? The previous examples only earned one medal. When calculating medal combos, it is important to understand that the base score is attached to every medal everytime it's earned, that includes the EMP and Multikill medals. This means, for example, that an "EMP Headshot" has a base score equivalent to two kills when only one is made because the EMP medal includes the base score in it's formula. Let's take a look:

Brute Captain EMP Headshot
1 Brute Captain HS = (50*1.25) = 62.5
1 Brute Captain EMP = (50*1.25) = 62.5
(62.5 + 62.5) = 125
(125*61.5) = 7686 total points for 1 brute, nice. What if we got a multi kill of those?

Brute Captain EMP Headshot Multikill
3 Brute Captain HS = (50*1.25) + (50*1.25) + (50*1.25) = 187.5
3 Brute Captain EMP = (50*1.25) + (50*1.25) + (50*1.25) = 187.5
3 Brute Captain MK = (50*1.25) + (50*1.25) + (50*1.25) = 187.5
(187.5 + 187.5 + 187.5) = 563
(563*61.5) = 34,625 total points holy crap!

The possibilities here are numerous! Time to get creative.

Double Scarab Multi Kill
2 Scarab MK, 1 Grunt MK = (500*1.25) + (500*1.25) + (10*1.25) = 1262.5
1 Grunt HS = (10*1.25) = 12.5
(1262.5 + 12.5) = 1275
(1275*61.5) = 78,413...*drools

As you can see it's pretty easy to calculate any combination of medals for any number of enemies using this system. In order for you to do your own you will need to know what each enemy is worth! Well looky what we have here:

Wow, that certainly is impressive. That clears most things up for me...

I thought goatrope had a pretty high score for Cortana...I would also encourage people to get their videos captured so that I (among other people who don't have a Xbox 360) can enjoy them as well ;)

One thing I can suggest to you Maluu, is a conversion factor to see your highest possible score based on your base points. I have it ready, here it is:

((Base score (Skulls [16.5]+ Difficulty[4]) Time Multiplier [3])=Grand Total Score

Runner’s Comments: Definitely improvable. This was mostly done to finish up our million point challenge, but is still a decent score. Missed a lot of headshots, and ended with 3:20 to spare. Could've gone quite a bit slower and killed more enemies.

Runner’s Comments: I think this is pretty close to optimal for 2.5x. However, a while ago Cody mentioned doing this level with a 2x multiplier, but with Mythic on and quite a few more kills. If he had completed a good run he probably would've broken 400k. So if somebody could pull that off that'd be great, but going deathless over a half hour level is quite a task.

I dunno. I did a run with all 13 skulls, but I focused more on actually surviving than on killing enemies, so the score probably isn't optimal. This page shows it as #1, but I know for a fact there are a ton of scores missing for the other levels, so chances are it's missing some for Cortana as well.

EDIT: Since my capture card broke, if somebody wants to record my score runs that'd be very much appreciated. :)

I really don't like this kind of math. You assume that I'll still be able to beat the level in under 30 minutes even though every enemy has twice as much health as before, and I have to melee for shields. Plus the difference between normal and legendary is enormous. It's simply unrealistic to just punch in the max multipliers and say that the result is "possible."

It is one theory I am using. It is not the best theory but it can help you by practicing more.

Err...Did you not read the "Formulas" section, where I do just that? Your missing a parentheses btw ;)

also, Cody I need all of the information in order to add it to the table. Can you do it like goatrope please?
