HIH EasyRead forum archives
Ok, so we haven't released any new hand-coded projects in some time, and this is the first of a few we've got lined up. Let me introduce you to the HIH EasyRead forum archives.

We want to take vBulletin, and an online forum community in general, to the next level, and this is the first step in that direction. Forums are great for many things, but they're also fairly poor at presenting information in an easily searchable, easily navigated, easily read format. This project takes aim at the last two of those.

We've created a few scripts that create static webpages filled with the content of each thread in a few select areas of our forum. This buys us a few things. First, it allows threads (now in webpage format) to be browsed all at once (no multiple pages), without all the overhead created by the vBulletin software (no avatars, gamercards, smilies, and the like). Another good result is that if we want to give someone a permalink to a thread in our forum that isn't likely to change much, we can link them to the archive version of that thread, and they'll see a nice HIH webpage version of the thread content.

In addition to the above, the search dudes (Google, Yahoo, etc.) have a difficult time crawling forums and making sense of the data. We're hoping that this archive will make our content more easily searchable, and findable, by the search machines of the interwebz.

This is version 1 of the archive, and I'm keeping a running list of bugs and suggestions, and so if you have any of either, place them in this thread. Once all the wrinkles are worked out, I'll probably update the entire archive once a week or so. Right now it's at a little under 9000 pages, written in 5-6 minutes by the script.

Pretty neat, I'll figure it out later.
Wow... Thats freaking huggly.
Some of the links in thar lead to no-man's-land and the 404 "page cant be found" gheyness, but other than that. Wow. Just hawt.
Massive win.
Not sure if this is possible, but it would get rid of a lot of junk if all of the threads with zero to ten views/posts didn't show up. Just trying to help. ;)

EDIT BY DUKE: I'll think about that a bit.

If you find a link to a 404, run it by me so I can check it out.

Those threads that contain strange characters in the title won't work right until I scrub those characters out a little better. That's next version. :)
Ahh, OK. I cant remember if I saw a couple that didnt work otherwise, but all the one's with the wierdo characters dont work.
I'll give the halo 1 section a run-through again, to make sure. I thought I noticed a couple that didnt work.
This stuff looks pretty cool Ducain. I'll have to check it out in more detail later.

I did notice a 400 error with a thread titled "Iwhbyd 100%". I don't know if that's on my end or not though.

Personally, i dont like it. If you make it so they run side by side, im all for it because of the search engines thing, but i dont really see this as being something so incredibly amazing that i would put tons of time and effort into. However, things have only gotten better in the 2 and something years i have been at HIH, so keep up the good work Duke
thats pretty cool...

Personally I think it should be sorted through number of posts, so it would be easier to find the "bigger" threads, which normally would include useful information.

But I loves it at the moment =">
Me Likey the new feature.

Ok, so you don't like it because...

you didn't even say why, so I'll take that with a grain of salt. :)

If you don't see the reason why we're doing it, that's fine, but don't act like there isn't a reason. :)

I'm looking for constructive criticism guys, not just criticism. Tacking 'keep up the good work' at the end doesn't make it any better.
I personally liked it, if you can add in a search feature it would be awesome. What I would like is if you could order the threads by posts or by author, it would make it easier to search.

I'm not sure if it's a bug or not, but some threads were taking forever to load, and some of threads stop halfway (but then again, that was the 77 thread, which be bigger than the current capacity...I don't really know). Otherwise, I'm down with it. This beats searching in the regular forums.

I think that would help alot... Some sort of "sort by post number" thing.
I like it, easy way to find something you just ctrl-f something and see what's there.
I likey. I think it would be cool if the trickser archives and stuff were in this format. It would make it much easier on many people.

Ctrl f works good, although a search function would help.
Thanks for the input guys. I'm been keeping a bug/suggestion list, and Phantom put one together also.

For the most part, this feature is for 1. Search engines 2. Helping users quickly find a thread and scan the contents quickly, and 3. In the future, allowing us to create feature pages from forum content.

Cheers.

Maybe set an option for newest stuff first? Rather than oldest.

Also: No word filters active in there. =P
